Chase's first talk in Sacrament Meeting

So Chase turned twelve and had the opportunity to give his first talk in church this week. He did such a great job! I was so proud of the time he took to write it and especially his willingess to practice it with me over and over- learning to slow down and speak clearly. His rehearsing paid off- he delivered it fantasitcally and our ward was so kind to give him all sorts of positive feedback. What a great, confidence building experience for a twelve year old boy! I'm so proud of his great effort and willingness to work hard at what was asked of him.

He has posted the text of his talk on his own blog "To Be Decided Later" which is off t0 the left in my blogs column. Feel free to give it a read and tell him how you liked it. (I think it's great and tells a lot about Chase that he uses jalapenos as an example of his favorite, most loved thing to put on a sandwich... He certainly adds spark and spice to the sandwich of our lives!)

The Stats

John has been gone for 8 days. In that time we have had 1 household emergency (see post below), suffered the tragic death of 2 pet fish, and lost a whopping 5 baby teeth. Emma has lost 1, Chase has lost an impressive 3, and Luke lost 1 tonight at dinner.

Three more days till John gets back... stay tuned- at this rate there is bound to be more to report!

The Unmaker

Water, water everywhere...

Friday night Zach alerted me to a wet spot on the carpet underneath our runner. Closer inspection revealed suspicious swelling of the baseboard and water staining and drywall tape bubbling on the ceiling. The backside of that wall is shared with my kitchen- checking out the flip side yeilded water seeping out of the light switch plate, wood trim pulling away from the wall and the hardwood floor in the corner of the kitchen swollen, warped and discolored. Lovely.

A thorough examination of the upstairs bath resulted in no errant water. Behind the toilet and all under the sink were clean and dry. (Okay, mostly clean but totally dry!)

I emailed my landlords but they are in Germany and it was the middle of the night for them. Called a plumber (at 8pm on a Friday night) only to be told that they would have to cut open walls and couldn't do that without homeowner permission... So we stopped all water use for the night and hoped the ceiling didn't come crashing down in the night.

By 10am on Saturday all parties had communicated and a delightful water damage mitigation crew showed up at my house. (Really, they were very nice people.) They cut chunks of drywall out of my ceiling and wall, removed my kitchen cabinets and part of the hardwood flooring, tore up my carpet and have installed multiple blowers, dehumidifiers and the like. My house is a noisy, cord and water drainage tube filled disaster zone. It will dry out till Wed. and then the fun of rebuilding will begin.

Turns out the culprit was a leaking elbow joint in the hot water supply line. I was so happy it wasn't our fault!

Oh yes, and did I mention that (of course) John is TDY in San Antonio for all this excitement?

PS. You get bonus points if you get the title of this post. ;-)

Awesome wrestling bout!!

This is a video of the much anticipated rematch between Zach and the only kid who has beat him so far this season. It was so great! The best part of it (as a mommy) was to see Zach seek the kid out afterwards to tell him "good job" only to end up having a great, upbeat conversation and come over to me in the stands all happy about how he found out the kid is LDS and super nice.
